(Ewes and Lambs pre weaning)
Robin Archer moved from the family farm at Haltwhistle to Carry House in 1962
bringing with him two Leicester ewes to set up the original flock.
Mule lambs have been bred from Northumberland-type Blackface ewes and homebred
tups for sale at Bellingham ever since.
In 1974 a homebred tup was producing particularly good Mule lambs and was used
on two Leicester ewes - ever since the flock has split into two distinct types
running together. Traditional Leicesters continued to be bred but over the last
27 years the crossing section has been completely separate, based on the best
breeding homebred tups along with occasional purchases and taking ewes to
particularly good breeders elsewhere.
(Gimmers by Carry House 281/PS)
The traditional flock has been heavily influenced by Posty X1 (sons to
£4000 (2))
Eliza F3 (sons to £2900), Walton Highlight H3 (sons to
£4000)
and Jerriestown L8 (sons to £6000).
Most recently the £3600 homebred P5 has bred exceptionally well
while the first crop of 13 tup lambs by Carry House S1 averaged £1446.
(281/P5 overall Champion Slaley Show as tup lamb)
Since 1986 48 tup lambs have sold for in excess of £1000, peaking at £6400,
a record for the Hexham centre, in 2002.
This son of S1 sold to the Myfyrian flock with a half share retained for our
own use.
(T4 sold for £6400 to Myfyrian with 50% share retained)
Our previous best was £6000 for the 1997 Hexham Champion
which went on to sire the 2002 Champions at both the Royal Highland
and Royal Welsh Shows.
The top tup lamb averages at Hexham were in 1994 (17 Av £1272),
1997 (19 Av £1176) & 2002 (19 Av £1163).
Since judging was introduced in 1986, Carry House has only once been outside
the top 3
places for pens of 20 at Bellingham 1st Mule ewe lamb Sale, winning the Show 8
times.
Local Shows are attended regularly with both Mules and Leicesters with
Championships having been won at Northumberland County, Roman Wall, Slaley,
Allendale, Bellingham and Alston over the years.
